Cornwall Signs Education Twinning Agreement With Malaga

County Councillor Terry Lello And Dean Ashton, Cornwall's Director Of Children,Young People And Families, Will Travel To The Spanish Embassy In London On Friday, October 13th For The Official Signing Ceremony

Cornwall County Council will be signing a memorandum of understanding with the Spanish province of Malaga to create exciting new educational links between schools and colleges at a special ceremony at the Spanish Embassy in London on Friday, October 13th.

County Councillor Terry Lello, (Lib Dem) the Council's Lead Member for Children, Young People and Families and Dean Ashton, Cornwall's Director of Services for Children, Young People and Families, will sign the agreement at the ceremony which will be hosted by Doňa Cándida Martínez Lopez, Minister for Education of the Regional Government of Andalucía and by the Spanish Ambassador.

The aim of the twinning is to encourage links between schools in Cornwall and the province of Malaga. There is a special interest on both sides in using new technologies to promote language learning, as well as setting up traditional exchanges and projects.

'Spanish is the fastest growing language in Cornwall and the signing of this agreement will help young people experience Spain and Spanish directly for themselves." said Terry Lello. "We hope it will also help to promote Cornwall in Andalucia and provide a framework for many exciting joint projects in the future.'

The official signing of the memorandum follows a visit to
Spain earlier this year to discuss creating links between pupils and teachers in the two areas. This highly successful visit culminated with the presentation of an illustrated copy of the Spanish masterpiece Don Quijote de la Mancha to the Chairman of the County Council Doris Ansari in March.

Hayle Community School and Language College is already sampling the Spanish experience. Pepe Alarcon, a teacher from Malaga, and his son, Jose, are spending the year in Hayle. Pepe is seconded from his school in Vėlez-Malaga to research language learning in the British context as well as to act as the ambassador for the twinning programme. Jose has joined Year 7 at school and will spend the year following normal classes with his new Cornish classmates.

Both have been delighted by their first impressions of Cornwall. 'Es precioso', says Pepe, 'It is beautiful. We think many Spanish people will want to come to Cornwall and we are already preparing our first exchange project for this year'.
